What Your Hot Tub Actually Needs
Most hot tub dealers deliver the tub and tell you to “get an electrician.” Here’s what that actually means, so you know what you’re paying for.
A dedicated circuit. Almost every 240V tub needs its own circuit back to the panel — typically 40A or 50A depending on the model. It can’t share with anything else, and it can’t run off an existing outdoor receptacle.
GFCI protection. This is the non-negotiable one. A hot tub is a person sitting in water surrounded by electrical equipment. GFCI protection is what stops a fault from becoming a fatality, and the code requires it on every tub circuit.
A disconnect within sight of the tub. The Ontario Electrical Safety Code requires a means of disconnect that’s visible from the tub, at least one metre away but no more than three. That’s the grey box you see beside most installed tubs — it’s not optional and it’s not decorative.
The right wire for the route. Underground to a tub in the yard means direct-burial cable at proper depth, or conduit. Along a fence or deck means a different method again. The distance matters too — long runs need larger conductors to handle voltage drop.
Bonding. Metal parts around the tub — and in some cases the rebar in a surrounding pad — need to be bonded. It’s the part nobody asks about and the part that comes up on inspection.
Enough capacity in your panel. A 50A tub circuit on a 100A service alongside a stove, dryer and AC often doesn’t work out. A load calculation tells you before the tub shows up in the driveway.

- Whether the run is overhead, along a structure, or underground — trenching is the biggest single variable
- Your tub’s amperage, which sets the conductor size

- Finished basement or drywalled walls versus open joists
- Concrete or interlock in the path of a trench

Common Questions
Do I need a permit to wire a hot tub in Ontario?
Yes. A new circuit for a hot tub requires an ESA notification and inspection. I file it and book it as part of the job — the cost is in the quote.
How far from the tub does the disconnect have to be?
The Ontario Electrical Safety Code requires a disconnect within sight of the tub, at least one metre away and no more than three. It has to be reachable without climbing into the water.
Can I plug my hot tub into a regular outlet?
Only plug-and-play models, which are 120V and typically 15A or 20A. Anything 240V needs a dedicated hardwired circuit. If your tub came with a cord and a plug, check the manual — but most tubs sold in Ontario are 240V.
Can my 100A service handle a hot tub?
Sometimes. A 50A tub circuit alongside a stove, dryer and central air is a lot for a 100A service. A load calculation gives you a real answer. If it’s short, a panel upgrade or a lower-amperage tub configuration usually solves it.
Does the trench cost extra?
Yes, and it’s usually the biggest variable on the job. Open lawn is straightforward. Interlock, concrete, mature tree roots or a long run all add real time. I’ll tell you what the route looks like at the site visit.
How soon can you do it?
Most hot tub jobs are a day of work. Scheduling depends on how busy things are and when ESA can inspect — usually a week or two from the go-ahead, sometimes sooner.
